Is hard work is enough?
I used to believe so. I’ve got an Economics A-Level and a Degree. But let’s be honest…that doesn’t make me an expert.
But, you don’t need to be, to know the UK economy is looking…bleak.
I used to believe in the Forest Gump ‘Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.’ model of success:
Weather the storm, outlast the competition, work harder, care more, be innovative and the rest takes care of itself.
It’ll work itself out when the charlatans and dossers ‘wash away’.
But now I’m a recruiter, a parent of 3, and someone looking ahead to 2040+ and wondering:
👉 What future are we building for our kids?
👉 What jobs will actually exist?
👉 What skills will survive?
We hear AI will transform everything.
We hear the Trades are a “safe” option (and in HVAC, BMS and Refrigeration, demand is booming).
But not everyone’s built for that path.
2040+ feels like it’s racing toward us with a dystopian combo of economic instability and AI dominance.
The Matrix and Terminator didn’t feel like documentaries back in the day.
Now I’m not so sure.
I want to tell my kids to follow their dreams…
But under this Government, that’s starting to feel like a reckless strategy.
We need to start having real conversations about where this is going, and what we want to leave behind.
🔧 If you had to advise your son or daughter, today, what future-proof skill or industry would you point them toward?
Skills? Trades? Creativity? Tech? Resilience?
