Living in the Now
Got Kids? Got Friends? Got Pets? Got Passions?
There’s a common trap we all fall into with these: time.
If you just about make “quality time” for the things and people you love, what it really means is you’re not making “regular time” for them.
Is the “all-singing, all-dancing” two-week holiday to Disneyland Florida worth it if you barely see your kids for the other 50 weeks because you’re working so hard to afford it?
You love your dog, but it’s the dog walker who spends more time with them, or worse, they don’t get the attention they deserve because you’ve taken on extra hours to afford a car you don’t even care about.
What about your hobbies? Are they more like distant memories?
If your “passions” live on your CV under “interests,” when was the last time you actually enjoyed them?
Are these the things you vaguely remember enjoying as a child?
Is watching football and the odd meal out really enough to justify working 40 - 60+ hours a week in a job you merely tolerate?
Your two most valuable resources are time and money.
Before dismissing a new opportunity, calculate your net earnings per hour. You might discover you can earn more per hour and free up time to focus on the people and activities that truly matter. You might enjoy the work more too!
Familiarity and job security often keep us in our comfort zones. But don’t let them stop you from seeing the bigger picture. Sometimes, popping your head above the parapet is all it takes to realise you’re selling yourself short.
Because what you’re not changing, you’re choosing.
