Victim Mentality?
WHAT YOU’RE NOT CHANGING, YOU’RE CHOOSING.
Here’s a reality check: if you’re not actively making changes to your career situation, you’re effectively choosing it.
It’s easy to stay in the comfort zone.
Maybe it’s the fear of change, the hassle of updating your CV, or a nagging doubt that "things might improve."
But let’s get real…sometimes staying is just procrastination in disguise.
If you’re putting up with a bad boss, an uninspiring role, or even colleagues who microwave fish at work, you’re choosing that reality.
“I can’t leave; I have bills to pay!” is the career equivalent of “I’ll start my diet on Monday.”
While responsibilities are real, so are opportunities. The job market is vast, and you owe it to yourself to explore possibilities that make you feel alive…not drained. Remember, staying is also a choice…a choice to remain stuck.
What’s Holding You Back?
Fear of Failure: What if the new job is worse? Spoiler: It might be, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Staying safe is the surest way to stagnate.
Imposter Syndrome: You’re more capable than you give yourself credit for. If you’ve been surviving your current job, you’ve got skills worth shouting about.
The Effort Trap: Change requires effort, yes. But so does enduring an uninspiring job for 40+ hours a week.
How to Take Control
Audit Your Situation
Write down what you love, tolerate, and loathe about your current role. If the “loathe” list looks like a novel, it’s time for action.
Define What You Want
Is it more flexibility? Career growth? A fish-free canteen? Be specific. Vague desires lead to vague outcomes.
Make Micro Changes
Can’t leave immediately? Start small. Polish your LinkedIn, attend networking events, or take an online course. Small steps lead to big leaps.
Act Before You’re Ready
Waiting until you feel “ready” is a trap. Start looking, applying, and interviewing—even if you’re scared. Growth happens outside the comfort zone.
By not making changes, you’re quietly giving the thumbs-up to everything you dislike. Don’t let fear or inertia hold you hostage. Take the reins of your career and remember:
"WHAT YOU’RE NOT CHANGING, YOU’RE CHOOSING."
